Global Business Centre celebrates one year of operation

The Global Business Centre (GBC), an innovative initiative by Calgary Economic Development, opened its doors at 120 8th Avenue S.E. (Stephen Avenue) on June 29, 2010. As Southern Alberta's newest business resource, the GBC serves as a launching pad to increase international trade and business activity and as a landing pad to attract new investment and business growth to the Region. In addition to the suite of programs and services available to serve these two objectives, the GBC also provides exceptional event rental facilities such as meeting rooms, offices and temporary business desks.

In the first year of operations, the GBC hosted 25 foreign delegations, over 150 events and provided temporary office space for clients such as the Bank of China, Inter-American Development Bank and the Consulate of France. We are looking forward to the next 12 months with ambitious plans of adding export related programming and developing fruitful partnerships with local and international clients.

Networking and information-gathering events are scheduled at the Global Business Centre year-round.

Particularly well attended is the monthly Breakfast Club, featuring speakers from government (for example, consulate or embassy representatives) or businesses that provide trade services. Each speaker’s topic targets a specific sector and/or geographic area.

The Breakfast Club is beneficial for Calgary-based businesses, trade offices or consulates and industry associations, but municipalities outside of Calgary are also encouraged to host concurrent meetings via video-conference.

In addition, special events – receptions, new business or product launches and meet-and-greets – are frequently hosted by the Global Business Centre.
